Drug Offenses

drug crimes lawyer covington la

Under Louisiana drug law, you can be subject to severe penalties if you are convicted of a felony drug possession charge. Even a drug crime as minor as possession and distribution of just an ounce of marijuana can expose you to harsh punishment in Louisiana. Statistics released by Human Rights Watch indicate that most people charged with drug crimes are not violent people. Many people have families and good jobs but are caught making a mistake by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

LOUISIANA PENALTIES FOR DRUG CRIMES ARE SERIOUS.

First offense: Depending on the amount of marijuana being possessed, a conviction can carry up to six months in jail
Second offense: up to $1000 fine and/or six months in jail
Third offense: felony conviction, up to two years in jail
Fourth offense: felony conviction, up to eight years in jail.
  • Intent to sell/distribute:
First offense (cocaine or methamphetamines): Depending on the quantity, penalties range from two to thirty years in prison.
First offense (heroin): five year minimum mandatory sentence, forty year maximum
First offense (illegal prescription pills or other drugs): Depending on the type of pill, penalties range from zero to thirty years. In addition, you can be charged with illegal possession of prescription drugs for having prescription medication in your car that is not yours. If convicted, you will face strict penalties for the felony offense.

In my experience, chemical dependency is one of the leading causes of crime in the St. Tammany Parish and surrounding Parishes. If you committed a crime because of your addiction or reliance on illegal drugs, there are often alternatives to prison. I can help you get probation in many instances based on the successful completion of a chemical dependency program.
